David Luiz has penned a new one-year contract with Arsenal, the Premier League club have confirmed.
The Brazil centre-back, joined the Gunners last summer in an eight million euros deal from Chelsea but only signed for an initial 12 months.
His original deal was due to end on June 30 but an agreement has been reached for the defender to stay on for the 2020/21 campaign.
Luiz’s future had been called into question after his performance against Man City last week came under great scrutiny following a series of erratic performances which included him being sent off 25 minutes after coming on as a substitute against Manchester City last week.
Luiz was at fault for the first goal before then conceding a penalty and getting sent off early in the second half. He also conceded a penalty and made a mistake that led to Raheem Sterling’s opening goal in the same game.
Arsenal have also moved to make Pablo Mari’s loan move permanent – for a fee of around £14million – while Cedric Soares is to sign a four-year contract following his temporary switch from Southampton.
Both players will formally complete their permanent moves when the transfer window opens next month.
