LAWMA partners UNIDO, FBRA to tackle plastic waste, establish 4 recycling hubs in Lagos

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced a new strategic partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) to promote sustainable plastic waste management and establish four plastic recycling hubs across Lagos.

The partnership is part of the UNIDO Project 210184, titled “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains through Circular Economy Practices,” which is funded by the Government of Japan.

The initiative aims to enhance Nigeria’s capacity for inclusive and sustainable industrial development by addressing plastic pollution at its source.

In a statement signed by Folashade Kadiri, Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, the Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that the project would be implemented across two land parcels in Lekki and Lagos Mainland, which have already been secured.

Gbadegesin highlighted that LAWMA is adopting an innovative approach to merge education with sustainability in addressing plastic pollution.

He also encouraged other government agencies to join similar initiatives, emphasizing the global importance of tackling plastic pollution.

LAWMA’s Executive Director of Finance, Kunle Adebiyi added that the initiative, which began in 2022 under UNIDO’s leadership, now includes LAWMA and FBRA as key stakeholders in the effort.
