Labour Party Appoints Interim National Chairman, Secretary Ahead of Convention

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has appointed Senator Usman Nenadi as the Interim National Chairman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the Interim National Secretary.

The appointments were made on Friday, July 18, 2025, during the party’s NEC meeting held in Abuja.

According to the NEC, the newly constituted interim working committee will oversee the day-to-day operations and political activities of the party until a national convention is held to elect a new leadership.

Congress and Convention Plans Approved

Also during the meeting, the NEC approved a schedule for congresses at various levels:

  • Ward Congresses
  • Local Government Area Congresses
  • State Congresses
  • Zonal Congresses
  • National Convention

The party’s National Secretariat has been directed to publish guidelines and timelines for these exercises to ensure transparent, democratic elections across all levels of the party.

The move is part of the Labour Party’s broader restructuring effort following internal disputes over leadership legitimacy and calls for more accountability from party stakeholders.
