Kogi, Bayelsa polls marred by violence


Residents of Bayelsa and Kogi states are today voting to determine who will govern the state for the next four years.

In Bayelsa, 45 candidates are in the governorship race, while in Kogi state, the race involves a total of 24 candidates.

There has been a series of violence at various polling units in both states.

At about 1:20-m Suspected thugs attacked and destroyed electoral materials at Ward 8 in Registration Area Centre (RAC) in Ekeremor LGA of Bayelsa, while a polling agent of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was beaten up by thugs who disrupted voting at ward 1, Obeiba/Ihima in Okehi local government area of Kogi state.

Meanwhile, governorship candidate of the SDP, Natasha Akpoti alleges that there has been gunfire in the area.

Elsewhere at PU 004, Ayetoro ward 1 in Ijumu local government area of Kogi state, suspected thugs have snatched ballot boxes and chased away voters

The polling unit is Dino Melaye’s voting unit.

INEC is conducting a rerun senatorial election in the area following an appeal court ruling that nullified Melaye’s election victory and ordered a fresh election.

Melaye had cast his vote before violence broke out in the area.

At least one person was reported shot after the hoodlums opened fire.
