Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) Initiates Indefinite Strike in Ondo State Over Financial Autonomy

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Ondo State Branch, has commenced an indefinite strike effective Friday, June 13, 2025, in response to the state government’s failure to implement financial autonomy for the judiciary.

In a statement issued in Akure, the state Secretary of JUSUN, Kehinde Alade, announced the commencement of the industrial action, citing the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Ondo State Government on June 4, 2025.

The union expressed concern over the government’s non-compliance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on May 20, 2015, which mandates the release of funds to the judiciary in line with constitutional provisions.

The statement emphasized that the government’s continued disregard for the MoU has adversely affected judicial operations and the welfare of its members.

JUSUN has directed all members to stay off duty until further notice and to adhere strictly to the guidelines of the industrial action.

The union called on the state government to take immediate steps to fulfill its obligations and implement the MoU to avoid further consequences.

This development has led to the closure of courts across the state, including the High Court, Magistrate Courts, and the Federal High Court in Akure, as judicial workers comply with the strike directive.

JUSUN’s action underscores the ongoing nationwide struggle for judicial financial autonomy, a critical issue that has seen limited progress despite previous agreements and court judgments.

The union’s leadership continues to advocate for the full implementation of constitutional provisions to ensure the independence and effective functioning of the judiciary.
