Iraqi forces shoot dead 13 protesters

No fewer than 13 protesters have been shot dead by Iraqi security forces in the past 24 hours as renewed demonstrations swelled rapidly across the Middle East country.

Medical sources say eight people were killed on Monday and at least five others were shot dead early on Tuesday.

More than 260 Iraqis have been killed since protests began last month against corruption and deteriorating economic conditions.

The new violence flared a day after Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi appealed to protesters to suspend their movement which he said were having an economic impact the country could not afford.

Abdul Mahdi has said he is willing to resign if politicians agree on a replacement. But protesters say that is not enough and the entire political class needs to go.
