Iran backs El-Zakzaky’s India trip

The Iranian foreign ministry has welcomed the news of Shi’ite leader Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat’s medical trip in India.

The couple was flown to India on Tuesday after a Kaduna State High Court granted their application to seek medical attention in New Delhi, India.

In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Seyed Abbas Moussavi, the Iranian government expressed optimism that the trip will provide grounds for all disagreements between the religious sect and the Nigerian government to be resolved amicably.

“We hope that presence of Mr. Zakzaky outside the country will provide a better opportunity for resolving the problems of the last few years between the Islamic Movement of Nigeria and the government to guarantee the Shi’ites’ rights, removing the restrictions on the IMN and freedom of the prisoners,” the statement read.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports this process and declares its readiness for any assistance,” Moussavi added. He also wished full health for the Islamic cleric.

El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in detention since December 2015 after an altercation between members of the sect and the Nigerian army troops in Zaria, Kaduna state.
