Former Imo governor, Rochas Okorocha, has finally received his certificate of return as winner of the senatorial election in Imo west.
In a statement signed by its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, INEC confirmed that it had indeed released the certificate of return to the former governor in accordance with an order from a federal High court.
The electoral body however announced that it will appeal against the court decision, saying it would create a bad impression on Nigeria’s electoral law which promotes free and fair conduct of elections.
INEC had refused to issue Okorocha his certificate of return after the returning officer for Imo west senatorial district claimed that he was forced to announce the election result. He also alleged that the result was tampered with by the thugs loyal to the governor.
The presentation came barely hours after the ninth National Assembly was inaugurated.
Without a certificate of return, Okorocha could not take part in the inauguration or voting of the new leadership of the Senate.
