INEC declares Kogi West Senatorial poll inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Kogi West senatorial rerun election inconclusive.

The returning officer for INEC, Olayinde Lawal announced this on Sunday night after stating that the margin lead between both candidates was not up to the number of registered voters in the affected polling units.

Lawal noted that Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress got a total of 80,118 votes while Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party got a total of 59,548 votes.

He then explained that the vote difference between both candidates is lower than the 43,127 registered voters in 53 polling units of 20 registration areas in the zone where elections were cancelled.

Following this, the returning officer stated that he is constrained by law to declare a winner because of the lead margin between the leading candidates.

He added that INEC will announce a new date for the conduct of a supplementary election in the 53 polling units before a winner can be returned.

Meanwhile, Melaye had earlier called for the cancellation of the elections on grounds that it was marred by compromise, extreme violence, and rigging.
