Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to halt the ongoing violence in Benue State and bring all perpetrators to justice.
The commitment follows a brutal attack over the weekend in Yelewata, a border town in Benue, where suspected herdsmen killed several residents, escalating fears of insecurity in the region.
In response, President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and enforce his earlier mandate for lasting security in the state. The President also tasked Governor Hyacinth Alia with convening reconciliation forums aimed at fostering dialogue between farmers, herders, and communities to end the bloodshed and promote peaceful coexistence.
During a meeting with Governor Alia on Monday at the Government House in Makurdi, IGP Egbetokun expressed President Tinubu’s deep concern over the attacks, emphasizing the implications for Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national security.
Governor Alia commended the President and security forces for their increased operations but highlighted the urgent need for more effective strategies to protect vulnerable communities amid a surge in violence.
Following the briefing, the IGP proceeded to Yelewata to personally assess the situation and coordinate further measures to contain the crisis.
This visit underscores the administration’s intensified focus on ending the persistent violence that has long plagued Benue, reflecting a broader push to stabilize the region and safeguard citizens.
