IGP removes Anambra Police Commissioner


The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Anambra Police Commissioner, Tony Olofu.

Echeng Eworo Echeng has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner in the State.

Mister Olofu, who has struggled to contain the violence in Anambra State has now been redeployed to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The IGP has also ordered the deployment of a detachment of NPF Special Forces to the troubled southeastern state to bolster and complement the ongoing peace-building efforts of the Nigeria Police Operation Restore Peace in Anambra State.

Anambra State has witnessed series of deadly violence in recent times blamed on separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. The group though denies it is responsible for the violence in the troubled state.

Recently, the husband of a former Minister of the country was brutally murdered in the state by yet-to-identified gunmen. Dr. Chike Akunyili had been returning from the town of Onitsha, where he had gone to receive an award in honour of his late wife, when the gunmen opened fire at his vehicle killing him and his aides.

Several other people have also been killed in the state in recent times including security agents.
