A group of pro-government protesters have gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja for a counter-protest against the #EndSARS memorial protest in the nation’s capital.
The group, Vanguard For Justice, staged their protest holding up placards which read “Lekki shooting was a hoax”, and “Nobody died at Lekki Tollgate in Lagos.”
Spokesperson of the group, Adamu Yusuf, who spoke to TV360 Nigeria’s correspondent, said there is no proof of any killing at the Lekki Tollgate on October 20, 2020.
Earlier in the day, human rights activists, Omoyele Sowore and Deji Adeyanju led another protest to mark the one year anniversary of the #ENDSARS protests against police brutality which culminated into the alleged shooting of peaceful protesters at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on October 20, 2020.
The group had converged on the Unity Fountain Ground in Maitama chanting anti-government songs with inscriptions such as: ‘We never forget 20.10.20 #EndSars Memorial’, ‘Give us justice’, ‘End police brutality’ amongst others.
They were, however, stopped halfway into the procession to the National Assembly by a combined team of heavily armed security operatives.
Both the federal government and the Lagos state government have repeatedly denied that security operatives opened fire at protesters at the Lekki Tollgate. On Wednesday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, described the Lekki incident as a “phantom massacre”.
