Emir of Qatar to meet with Donald Trump


Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is paying an official visit to the United States for high-level talks with Pentagon and White House officials.

Trump welcomed the Qatari emir at dinner hosted by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Monday.

Sheikh Tamim later held a meeting with acting Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper at the Pentagon.

Esper thanked the Qatari emir for his support to American service members stationed in the country, describing Washington’s al-Udeid as a strategic installation in the Persian Gulf state.

“Qatar’s long-standing willingness to host United States forces is emblematic of the close ties between our two countries,” Esper said.

He further noted that Washington-Doha relationship must remain resilient in the face of the evolving threats in the region, appreciating “Qatar’s willingness to support our initiative to increase maritime domestic domain awareness in the Gulf.”

In response, the Qatari leader, said both countries can cooperate to find the best means to “de-escalate the tension we have in our region.”

Sheikh Tamim is expected to hold talks with Trump on Tuesday afternoon. According to the US President, the discussions would encompass issues from defense to purchases and trade.

Qatat hosts Washington’s biggest military base in the Persian Gulf region.
