Elon Musk to buy Twitter for $44 billion

Elon Musk has clinched a deal to buy microblogging platform, Twitter Inc for $44 billion on Monday in a transaction that will shift control of the social media platform populated by millions of users and global leaders to the world’s richest person.

Trading in Twitter’s shares have been halted amid reports that the firm is set to agree a takeover deal with Elon Musk as early as Monday.

The board of the social media giant is reported to have met with Musk over the weekend to discuss his $43bn offer.

Twitter had initially rebuffed the billionaire’s approach.

There are however reports that Twitter is now in the final stages of negotiations with  Musk to buy the business.

Musk recently questioned Twitter’s adherence to free speech principles and had asked his followers if a new platform was needed.

On Monday, after news of his negotiations with Twitter broke, he tweeted: “I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means.”

Meanwhile, the deal will end Twitter’s run as a public company since its 2013 initial public offering.
