Eight die, 12 injured in Lagos auto-crash


The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Agency, Tunde Akinbiyi, has confirmed that at least eight persons have died while 12 others have been injured in an accident on Wednesday night around Danco and Berger axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Akinbiyi said three trucks and four cars were involved in the tragedy due to over speeding. A container on one of the truck fell on two buses, while other vehicles colided.

The victims have been rushed to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) and FAMOBIS Hospital Lotto.

“From investigations, it was learnt that the unfortunate fatal crash was caused by the overspeeding, reckless driving and loss of control on the part of one of vehicles involved which led to a container falling off from its hook on two buses and other vehicles ramming into each other in the process, in an attempt to escape from the scene,” Akinlabi said.

He gave the following details of the vehicles: LSR 560 XJ, Toyota bus white; XD 792 EZA Masda bus; ABC 512 ZV, Ash, Toyota Sienna; APP 196 RQ gold, Toyota Camry; DED 776 XA red, Iveco Tipper; APP 248 XT white, Daf Tipper and LND 04 XX.

“The crash scene has been cordoned off, on the inbound lane of the expressway. The motoring public are advised to drive cautiously along the diversion route created by Julius Berger and avoid speeding beyond 50kmph on the stretch,” he added.
