Edo Governorship candidates sign peace accord ahead of polls


To prevent  violence before, during and after the Edo State Governorship election, six political parties namely; All Progressives Congress (APC), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Young Peoples Party (YPP) African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has signed a peace accord pledging to avoid violence at all cost.

The deal which was organised by the National Peace Committee was held in Benin City, the state capital.

During the event, State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Grace Ease advised all participants to observe all COVID-19 preventive measures during election.

While delivering a paper during the event, a professor in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineer, Ambrose Ali University, ( AAU), Ekpoma Prof. Robert Ehimen Okonigene, said the reason why there is chaos and violence in elections in Nigeria is that the political gladiators always encouraged it.Hence the essence of the peace accord.

In attendance is the Chairman, National Peace Committee and former Head of State, Abdulsalam Abubakar, member of the committee and Catholic Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah among others.

Also, members of the political, traditional, and religious circles were there to witness the signing, to pave way for the smooth conduct of the exercise.
