COVID-19: Minister warns doctors against using unapproved medicines

Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has called on medical doctors and other healthcare professionals to shun unauthorized treatment of COVID-19 patients.

At the Presidential Task Force (PTF) briefing on COVID-19 in Abuja, on Thursday, Ehanira said: “All healthcare professionals and associated personnel should diligently follow safety infection prevention and control protocols,. both inside and outside healthcare facilities, and not to indulge in unauthorized treatment of COVID-19 cases.”

The minister explained that the appeal was important to reduce the incidences of health workers getting infected with the disease.

This comes after Governor of Bauchi state, Bala Mohammed said he used Chloroquine, Zithromax, and Vitamin C to treat the coronavirus, with the help of God.

Mohammed then told health workers managing the state’s COVID-19 patients to treat them with chloroquine and Zithromax than watch them die of the disease.

But the National Agency for Food Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have warned Nigerians not to use any drugs for the treatment of COVID-19 other than what the NCDC approves.

“The agency has not granted any approval to any products for use as a cure or vaccine against COVID 19”, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye said in a statement.
