Covid-19 Pandemic: Dutch season cancelled

There will be no champion in the Dutch Eredivisie league following the cancellation of the season due to disruptions caused by the novel coronavirus crisis.

Both Ajax and AZ Alkmaar were level on points at the top of the Eredivisie, but neither will be crowned champions.

After asking clubs to vote to decide the outcome of the campaign, the KNVB opted to ensure that clubs will remain in their current divisions for when football does resume in the country.

This means there will be no relegation as well this season.

Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte had earlier banned professional football until September in the face of the current health emergency.

With the development, Eredivisie becomes the first major European league to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
