At least eight inmates were killed and 50 others injured after prison officers used force to disperse a violent riot at Mahara prison in a suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The riot began on Sunday after some prisoners had demanded early release and the separation of COVID-19 infected prisoners amidst the soaring number of coronavirus cases in the facility.
The prisoners pulled down the protective fence and made an attempt to escape prompting the use of force by security officers.
In recent weeks, inmates in several prisons across the country have staged protests as a result of the spike in the number of coronavirus cases. More than 1,000 inmates in five prisons have tested positive for coronavirus, and at least two of them have died.
Sri Lanka has so far recorded 22,988 infections and 109 deaths.
