COP27 gets underway as world leaders open climate talks in Egypt

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres has called for a pact between developed and emerging economies, as well as International Financial Institutions to provide support for emerging economies to speed up renewable energy transition and reduce emissions.

Guterres made the call while giving his speech at the opening session of COP 27 in Egypt on Monday.

He explained that the world is on a highway to climate hell with its foot on the accelerator, adding that the world is fast approaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible if the right steps are not employed.

He also called for funding to ensure that poor countries cope with the climate impacts that have already occurred.
