Bill to tighten firearms control passes second reading at Senate

The Nigerian Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to prevent the proliferation of illegally possessed firearms in Nigeria. In his lead debate on the general principles of the Bill, Senator Sani Musa said that analysts have estimated that out of the 500 Million weapons that may be circulating in West Africa, 350 Million which represents 70% of such weapons, can be found in Nigeria. The main aim of the Bill, according to Senator Musa, is to tighten firearms control and to curtail the importation of illegal firearms.
The bill after consideration was referred by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan,to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to report back within four weeks.
