Benue PDP Demands Immediate Recall of Suspended Lawmakers

Party condemns Assembly’s actions as undemocratic and calls for reinstatement of 13 legislators suspended over opposition to Chief Judge’s removal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has demanded the immediate reinstatement of 13 members of the State House of Assembly who were suspended for opposing the alleged removal of Chief Judge Maurice Ikpambwese.

In a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Tim Nyor, the party described the suspension as “unjust, unconstitutional, and a direct affront to democratic principles.”

“These lawmakers took a patriotic stand against what can only be described as legislative misconduct and executive manipulation,” the statement read.

The suspended members had voted against the controversial ousting of Justice Ikpambwese earlier in February — an action the PDP insists was driven by the Executive arm of government. The party maintained that their suspension has left nearly two million Benue citizens without proper legislative representation.

“This decision has silenced the voices of constituents who now lack representation in matters of governance,” Nyor stated, adding that “such authoritarian actions must be condemned by all who value democracy.”

The party accused the Assembly leadership of suppressing dissent and acting under external influence, noting that the Chief Judge’s removal lacked legal and procedural justification and was met with condemnation from the legal community.

“It is disheartening and shameful that the 13 courageous lawmakers who stood for truth and integrity continue to face unjust punishment while democracy is being undermined,” the PDP said.

Calling on Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh and Governor Hyacinth Alia to act swiftly, the PDP urged the state to return to the path of democratic order and allow dissenting voices to thrive in the legislative process.

“We are not in a military regime. Democracy thrives on divergent views, and suppressing them erodes public trust,” the statement concluded.

The party is now calling on civil society, the judiciary, and the broader Nigerian public to join in demanding justice and the restoration of democratic norms in Benue State.
