Banks unblock MTN, reconnect telecom to banking channels

Commercial banks have reconnected MTN customers to banking channels after disconnecting them from their channels, including the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) and banking apps last Friday.

In a tweet, Pantami had said following the face-off between MTN Nigeria and some banks, he had engaged the relevant regulators – the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) – and the CBN.
He had posted: “We have reached an advanced stage of resolving the issues for the services to be restored to our citizens. Many thanks!”

The banks blocked MTN subscribers, believed to be around 77millions accounting for about 45 per cent of the total telecommunication market share in Nigeria, with many of them stranded and unable to recharge airtime via USSD amid the Easter celebrations.

The blockade was due to reduction of banks’ commission from 4.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent by the telco.

The banks had written MTN to revert to the old commission, vowing to block MTN airtime in all their channels.
