President Muhammadu Buhari has downplayed claims that he has a favoured candidate for the 2023 elections, saying he will hand over to whoever Nigerians elect.

Making the remark while answering questions from journalists after observing the Eid-el-Fitr prayers at the Mambilla Barracks parade ground in Abuja, the president said he has no special candidate to replace him come 2023, adding that whoever succeeds him is “the person that Nigerians elect”.

Speaking on insecurity and the victims of the Abuja-Kaduna train, president Buhari said the bandits who attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train are using their abductees as human shields, making it difficult for the military to confront them and gave the assurance that the government would explore every opportunity to secure the captives alive and unhurt.
