Australia records highest number of bush fires

More than 90 bush fires are raging across the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) on Friday.

Australian authorities describe it as an “unprecedented” number of emergency-level fires.

The fires occurred mostly in drought-affected areas, and were worsened by gusty winds and up to 35 Celcius heat.

Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons, said at least 17 blazes are at the highest threat level, and added “We have never seen this many fires concurrently at emergency warning level.”

There are reports of people trapped in their homes in several places, with rescue teams unable to reach them due to the strength of the fires.

Authorities warned some people to seek shelter from fires rather than flee, as it was now “too late to leave”.
