At least 20 passengers died in a fire in an accident on Friday involving a commercial bus and a Sienna car.
The accident occurred at Maya/Lanlate Junction in Ibarapa East Local Government area of Oyo State.
The two vehicles were travelling in opposite direction when they had head on collusion following which the vehicles caught fire, immediately.
A witness said that 20 passengers involved in the incident were burnt beyond recognition.
Confirming the incident, Gbenga Obalowo, the Chairman, Ibarapa East Local Government, said that he led a rescue team to the scene of the accident.
Obalowo described the incident as pathetic and unfortunate.
“They had a head-on collision and the two vehicles… which were both conveying passengers caught fire and got burnt beyond repair,” he said.
He said two people “with severe burns” survived the crash and they had been taken to the hospital.
Obalowo blamed the accident on speeding and reckless driving.
In July, 30 people were burnt to death when three vehicles collided on a highway in Kaduna state.
Last year, Nigeria recorded 10,637 road accidents which claimed 5,101 lives and injured more than 30,000 people, according to figures by the road safety commission.
