At least 16 killed, dozens hurt as fire engulfs Sudan factory

At least 16 people have died with dozens wounded in a fire triggered by an explosion at a factory in the Sudanese capital on Tuesday, doctors and witnesses said.

Thick plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky after the fire engulfed a tile manufacturing unit in an industrial zone in north Khartoum.

A doctors’ committee linked to the country’s protest movement said at least 16 people were killed and more than 90 injured.

The injured persons were taken to several hospitals in the capital, it said, urging off-duty doctors to help out.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.
