The Academic Staff of Universities Union (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of its members their salaries.

National president of the union, Biodun Ogunyemi, announced the strike at a press conference in Abuja on Monday.

He explained that the Federal Government has refused to pay the salaries of their members who failed to enroll into the federal government’s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS.

The union is opposing the mandatory payroll software for all public officials on the grounds that IPPIS does not consider some of the peculiar operations of universities.

It then went ahead to develope a unique payment system called UTAS, which it wants the government to adopt for paying university lecturers.

The indefinite stroke action follows the expiration of a two week warning strike that ended on Monday (today).
