Anambra Police Chief Champions Community Collaboration to Tackle Rising Insecurity

Anambra State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has called for enhanced community collaboration to address escalating security challenges in the South-East region.

During a recent security meeting at News Central’s town hall in Awka, CP Orutugu emphasized the importance of collective efforts in combating issues such as kidnapping, violent crime, and law enforcement accountability.

The forum convened key stakeholders, including security operatives, traditional rulers, and community leaders, to discuss collaborative solutions to the region’s security concerns.

CP Orutugu highlighted the significance of community engagement in restoring peace and expressed his commitment to addressing the actions of groups like IPOB, ensuring that insecurity is curtailed.

He also advocated for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to resolve conflicts related to land disputes, kingship tussles, and farmer-herder clashes, which often escalate into serious crimes.

The Commissioner underscored the need for increased community involvement, resources, and intelligence sharing to enhance security operations. He reiterated that security is a collective responsibility, and active participation from all sectors is essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in the state.

In addition to fostering community partnerships, CP Orutugu has taken proactive steps to address specific security issues. He recently reinstated the Cattle Menace Committee to address conflicts between herders and local communities, aiming to promote peaceful coexistence and prevent security threats arising from such clashes.

The Commissioner also emphasized the role of parents and guardians in guiding the youth, urging them to be proactive in their children’s lives to prevent involvement in criminal activities.

He commended the success of recent collaborations with local industrialists and traditional rulers, which have provided critical resources and intelligence for ongoing security operations.

The town hall concluded with a renewed commitment from all parties to foster police-community partnerships, uphold human rights, and ensure that security initiatives remain free from political interference.

Stakeholders agreed on the need for continuous dialogue, professional standards, and inclusive participation to address the root causes of insecurity in Anambra State and the wider South-East region.
