Alleged N7.1b Fraud: EFCC appeals judgement prohibiting retrial of Orji Uzor Kalu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has appealed the ruling of a federal high which stopped the retrial of former governor of Abia state, Orji Kalu on allegations of money laundering.

The EFCC had prosecuted Kalu and his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, on 39 counts of fraud involving N7.1 billion at a federal high court in Lagos after which the former governor was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

However, in a judgment delivered during an appeal on September 29, Justice Inyang Ekwo prohibited the federal government or any of its agencies from retrying the former governor.

Meanwhile, In the new appeal filed against Kalu, the EFCC is asking the appellate court to set aside the judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which prohibited it from retrying the former governor and his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited.

The Commission also wants the Appeal Court to order Senator Kalu and his company, to submit themselves for retrial, in line with the order of the Supreme Court in its May 8, 2020 judgement, voiding the earlier trial and conviction of Kalu and two others, and ordering a retrial.
