The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu of turning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari into a political publicity stunt.
In a statement issued Friday, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, criticized the Federal Executive Council (FEC) tribute held in Buhari’s honour, describing it as “a deliberate publicity stunt by an unpopular administration.”
President Tinubu had, on Thursday, praised Buhari during a special FEC session at the State House in Abuja, calling him “a good, decent, and honourable man” whose values would endure for generations. The event was attended by Buhari’s family, lawmakers, and government officials.
While acknowledging Buhari’s flaws, Tinubu commended his dedication to national service. But the ADC rejected the gesture as insincere.
“The choreographed FEC tribute, complete with a publicised appearance by the late President’s grieving son, was not a show of genuine respect,” the party said.
“It was a calculated PR move designed to distract from the administration’s growing failures and to rewrite history amid national mourning. This is hypocritical and in poor taste. You can’t discredit a man’s legacy for months and then stage-manage grief for the cameras,” the statement added.
The ADC also accused the government of using the Buhari family’s grief to boost its public image.
