Abortion laws: CSOs condemn Lagos guidelines on safe termination of pregnancies

Against the backdrop of recently released policy documents by the Lagos State Ministry of health to allow and guide safe termination of pregnancy, civil society organizations have called on the government to dismantle existing structures which they say promote abortion and related procedures in Nigeria.

Speaking during a protest in Lagos, the conveners condemned the intention of the Lagos state government to legalize abortion, adding that, making the procedure legal in the state will portends danger to women as abortion is generally unsafe.

They maintained that abortion must remain illegal and any person found guilty must serve the proposed jail term of up to 14 years as originally stipulated by law..
