The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has joined his ancestors at the age of 90.
The highly revered monarch passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday and exactly one year after ascending the throne as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Oba Olakulehin’s passing occurred in the midst of activities commemorating both his milestone birthday and his first coronation anniversary. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of Ibadan, as he was known for his quiet strength, cultural pride, and dedication to the traditional institution.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin was officially presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, following the death of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun.
He spent only one year on the throne, but his brief reign left an indelible mark on the people of Ibadan and the larger Oyo State community.
Further details about funeral arrangements and succession plans are expected to be released by the Oyo State Government and the Olubadan-in-Council in the coming days.
