Former Nigerian Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, has described the recent devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State, as an unfortunate event but emphasized that it was ultimately “an act of God.”
Speaking in a statement responding to the widespread destruction caused by the floods, IBB acknowledged the severe impact on lives, homes, and farmlands in the affected communities. However, he urged Nigerians to view the disaster within the context of natural forces beyond human control.
“It is truly regrettable what has happened in Mokwa. Lives have been disrupted, and properties lost. But we must recognize that certain calamities are beyond our intervention—these are acts of nature, or as many believe, acts of God,” Babangida said.
The former military ruler called for urgent government intervention to provide relief to displaced families and to assist in rebuilding efforts. He stressed the importance of long-term infrastructure improvements and disaster preparedness to mitigate future flooding risks.
IBB also encouraged Nigerians to come together in solidarity, offering support to the victims through donations, volunteer efforts, and prayers.
The recent floods in Mokwa have displaced thousands, destroyed farmlands critical to local food supply, and disrupted economic activities in the region, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced flood control measures across Nigeria’s vulnerable zones.
