Wizkid Joins Elite Club as Made in Lagos Surpasses 1 Billion Spotify Streams

Afrobeats superstar Wizkid has reached a major milestone, as his critically acclaimed album Made in Lagos surpasses 1 billion streams on Spotify, solidifying its place as one of the most influential Nigerian albums of all time.

Released in 2020 and followed by a deluxe edition in August 2021, Made in Lagos owes much of its streaming success to the global hit ‘Essence’ featuring Tems. The original version and its remix with Justin Bieber have collectively garnered over 400 million streams, making it one of the most streamed Afrobeats songs ever.

The Grammy-nominated album blends Afrobeats, R&B, and Pop with effortless finesse and features guest appearances from Burna Boy, Tems, H.E.R., Damian Marley, Skepta, BNXN (formerly Buju), Tay Iwar, Projexx, and Terri. Its global appeal earned Wizkid numerous awards and certifications, further elevating his reputation as a genre-defining artist.

Wizkid now joins a prestigious group of Nigerian stars whose albums have crossed the 1 billion stream mark on Spotify, including Burna Boy (Love, Damini), Rema (Rave & Roses), Ayra Starr (The Year I Turned 21), and Omah Lay (Boy Alone).

This milestone is yet another testament to Wizkid’s enduring legacy in the music industry. With a career spanning over a decade, he continues to set the pace for global Afrobeats dominance.

Following Made in Lagos, Wizkid released More Love, Less Ego in 2022, the Soundman Vol. 2 EP in 2023, and most recently, Morayo, his sixth studio album, further showcasing his evolution and staying power as one of Africa’s greatest music exports.
