25 migrants found alive in refrigerated truck on Dutch-UK Ferry

Dutch authorities have discovered 25 migrants in a refrigerated truck on a boat sailing from the Netherlands to Britain on Tuesday, emergency services said.

Rotterdam region emergency services said in a statement that the cargo vessel was heading to Felixstowe but returned to the Dutch port of Vlaardingen, near Rotterdam, immediately the stowaways.

Medical care was given to the people found in the container at the port while two out of them were taken to hospital for further treatment for possible hypothermia.

“The 25 people were taken off the ship and given the medical care they need. Two people were transported to the hospital for extra medical care. Twenty-three people were transferred to a police location after a medical check-up,” the statement read.

The driver of the truck has been reportedly detained.

Authorities were not immediately certain the nationalities of the migrants.

Just last October, the bodies of 39 Vietnamese nationals were found in a refrigerated truck in Britain, again uncovering the risks of irregular migrant routes to Europe.
