Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against repeating the strategic errors that contributed to its defeat in the 2023 general elections — particularly its controversial handling of the presidential zoning arrangement.
Speaking during a televised interview on Africa Independent Television (AIT), Senator Moro addressed concerns raised by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who recently warned that the PDP could face an even more devastating loss in 2027 if it fails to zone its presidential ticket to the South.
While referring to the minister’s remarks as “assumptions,” Senator Moro noted their weight, especially given Wike’s key role in founding the influential G5 group — a bloc of five governors who opposed the PDP’s decision to present a northern candidate during the last election.
“Those are assumptions. But coming from a minister who was central to the G5’s formation, I believe the party will take serious political note of that warning,” Moro stated.
He stressed the importance of self-evaluation within the party, warning that ignoring past lessons could lead to similar or worse outcomes.
“There’s no doubt that if the PDP continues to make the same mistakes that presumably led to our current predicament, the outcome will likely be the same,” he said.
Citing the famous Albert Einstein quote — “We cannot keep doing the same thing the same way and expect different results” — Moro underscored the urgency for the PDP to change course ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I believe the PDP should take that warning seriously, regardless of who it’s coming from, and make the necessary corrections. As the saying goes, ‘Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.’”
With internal debates ongoing and the 2027 elections approaching, Senator Moro’s remarks reflect mounting pressure on Nigeria’s leading opposition party to reassess its strategy, especially on sensitive issues like zoning, internal unity, and public perception.
