Fourteen gunmen have been killed in a foiled attempt to free some suspected bandits being held at a police station in Kastina-Ala town in Benue State
Spokesperson of the police force in the state, Catherine Anene, who confirmed the incident, explained that gunmen numbering about 50 on Sunday morning launched an attack on the station trying to rescue some criminals that had been attacked a day before.
She said the suspects they were trying to set free had been arrested by police on Saturday and detained.
“These activities are geared towards a total clamp down on bandits activities in the area. on 19th June, 2021 five bandits were arrested and detained at Kastina-Ala Police Division for investigation and prosecution.”
Explaining further, she noted that operatives at the police division, who were already on alert for any situation, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle killing fourteen of them while others escape with gunshot wounds on them.
She however added that police operatives were on the trail of the fleeing bandits and would not relent until they arrest the unscrupulous elements disturbing the peace of the society.
The police spokesperson urged local residents to assist the force with useful information that would lead to their arrest in order to achieve a crime free society.
